‘Mary Cooke daughter of Elizabeth Cooke. Baptized . Nº.7. this woman’s husband John Cooke sold her some years ago to John Turner with whom she has eversince cohabited & this child is by him christ[ened] Mary Cooke’.
Before divorce was readily attainable to all parts of society it was a not uncommon for an unsatisfactory marriage to be ended by the auction or sale of a wife.
