Hilda Zigomala

1869-1946

Frances Hilda North, one of the daughters of Charles North and Augusta, née Keppel, of Rougham Hall, was born on 29 July 1869. She married Major Pandia John Zigomala (1862-1933) at Rougham on 16 January 1889. They lived initially at Heath House, Farnham, Surrey, in India for much of the period from September 1891 to November 1896. Thereafter, they lived in London, mainly in Egerton Gardens. Except when in India, they made frequent visits to stay at Rougham Hall and other country houses in Norfolk and elsewhere, including particularly frequent stays at Wroxton Abbey, Oxfordshire (home of the Lords North), and Ashtead Park, Surrey.

NRO, MC 2738 (held at the Norfolk Record Office) contains photograph albums/journals, sketch and scrapbooks compiled by Mrs Hilda Zigomala (née North) of life at Rougham, Norfolk and postings in India with her husband’s regiment and ending with her husband’s and son’s army service during the First World War.

The Zigomalas’ only son, John, was killed in Russia in 1919. Thereafter, Mrs Zigomala dedicated herself to voluntary work, teaching crafts in Lord Roberts Memorial Workshops for disabled former servicemen, and was awarded the CBE in 1926. She was widowed in 1933 and died in London on 16 June 1946.
